The 4.5 billion miles for Ford are only hands free miles driven for the few models for which this is available and since activation in Q1 2022. This is in no way the total Ford ADAS mileage during the period which the NHTSA report covers. Maybe just do 2 minutes of googling before you write an entire substack post based on a completely false assumption.

Hi there. I explained in the article how Ford is unclear about the exact scope they cover with that number and its timeframe. I used this as an appropriately caveated example until Ford clarifies or provides more data.

Their report does NOT say this is only "hands free miles driven", though. It says:

"More than 38,000 customers have activated the BlueCruise feature, driving a combined 4.5 million miles using the technology."

They have previously used different names for their ADAS, but many vehicles equipped with their CoPilot 360 Assist+ system were updated to BlueCruise last year.

If you have a better source which clarifies any of this, please share!

It says:

"Customers are equipping new vehicles with Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driving technology. More than 38,000 customers have activated the BlueCruise feature, driving a combined 4.5 million miles using the technology."

- Ford May 2022 Sales Report

It clearly refers to the "HANDS-FREE DRIVING TECHNOLOGY". Further evidenced by it only being used by 38,000 customers. If anything the ambiguity here is if the miles are only for May 2022 or since beginning at some point in Q1. The per miles comparison with Tesla is therefore entirely wrong in your post.

Thanks. It is possible I was simply confused by Ford’s terminology here. I earlier today tweaked the wording to make it clear that I was not saying this is conclusive data from Ford, but rather an example of the kind of data we need in order to make meaningful comparisons.
